A filter can have an appropriate efficiency rating and still perform poorly if air passes around the media. Incorrect dimensions, a damaged frame, improper positioning or gaps around the filter rack can create an easier path around the filter.
Fast dust accumulation can also result from bypass around the filter, return-side leakage, damaged ducts or air entering the home from uncontrolled locations. Those conditions should be checked before increasing filter resistance.

In a typical residential cooling setup, AUTO allows the blower to operate with the cooling cycle and stop according to the system's control sequence after cooling demand ends. This is normally the starting point when investigating a humidity complaint.
ON keeps the blower running between cooling cycles. Under some conditions, continued airflow across a wet evaporator coil can return part of the retained moisture to the air instead of allowing it to drain away.
Systems with zoning, variable-speed blowers or manufacturer-specific controls may use different operating logic. Thermostat settings should therefore be considered together with the equipment configuration.
A compatible higher-efficiency filter can improve capture of airborne particles that pass through the HVAC system, but central filtration should not be treated as complete protection from wildfire smoke.
