How the cooling system is tested
The exact sequence depends on the symptom, equipment design, operating conditions, and access. The goal is to separate a simple filter or control problem from an electrical failure, airflow restriction, drainage issue, duct problem, or major equipment fault.
Thermostat and cooling call
The technician checks mode, setpoint, displayed temperature, thermostat response, wiring behavior, equipment staging, and whether the indoor and outdoor components respond correctly to the cooling call.
Return and supply air
Filter condition, return restrictions, supply delivery, blower operation, vent position, visible duct damage, and temperature change across the system may be reviewed to determine whether the equipment is moving and cooling air normally.
Static pressure when needed
When airflow appears abnormal, static-pressure testing can help identify restrictive filters, undersized returns, blocked coils, closed dampers, duct restrictions, or excessive resistance within the air-distribution system.
Indoor coil and blower
The inspection may include visible coil contamination, icing, blower operation, motor condition, wheel cleanliness, drainage symptoms, and signs that heat transfer is being limited by low airflow.
Outdoor condenser operation
Startup, fan operation, coil condition, airflow clearance, vibration, motor behavior, electrical response, and heat rejection are reviewed to determine whether the outdoor unit is operating under normal conditions.
Electrical measurements
Testing may include supply voltage, capacitor value, contactor condition, motor current, disconnects, breakers, control wiring, safety switches, and control-board output when those components relate to the reported failure.
Refrigerant-circuit performance
After airflow is confirmed, pressure and temperature readings may be compared with equipment conditions to evaluate refrigerant charge, coil performance, metering-device behavior, compressor operation, or signs that leak testing is needed.
Condensate drainage
The drain line, pan, float switch, condensate pump where installed, visible water, drain slope, and shutdown behavior are checked when the system leaks or stops because of a drainage safety.
Duct and room-comfort conditions
Crushed flex duct, disconnected runs, attic heat gain, blocked returns, closed vents, damper position, duct leakage, and room-to-room temperature differences may be relevant when equipment runs but comfort remains uneven.
System history and equipment condition
Age, previous repair history, parts availability, maintenance condition, equipment matching, warranty status, and prior refrigerant or compressor work help determine whether another repair is likely to provide reasonable service life.
Low refrigerant is a finding, not a complete diagnosis
An air-conditioning system does not normally consume refrigerant during operation. If testing indicates an abnormal charge, the technician should consider airflow, coil condition, operating conditions, previous service history, and possible leakage before recommending refrigerant adjustment or a larger repair.
