Compatibility review

Furnace replacement is a reasonable time to compare another gas furnace with an all-electric heat pump or dual-fuel system. The decision depends on the home's heating and cooling loads, electrical capacity, ducts, equipment location, comfort goals, installation changes, and current utility rates.

Gas furnace

Review gas service, venting, combustion air, applicable Rule 1111 requirements, airflow, controls, and compatibility with the cooling system.

Heat pump

Venting, Gas and Airflow Requirements

A gas furnace needs an appropriate fuel supply, ignition and safety controls, combustion-air provisions where applicable, and an approved method for removing combustion products. The blower and duct system must also move the required airflow while keeping furnace temperature rise within the manufacturer's listed range.

Carbon monoxide alarms are an important safety layer, but they do not correct improper combustion, damaged equipment, venting defects, or inadequate combustion air. Alarm placement should follow applicable requirements and the alarm manufacturer's instructions.

Gas piping and shutoff access The connector, shutoff, fittings, sediment-trap arrangement where required, and access must suit the equipment and installation conditions.

Blower type

Multi-speed and variable-speed describe blower operation, not burner staging. A variable-speed blower does not automatically mean the gas heat is modulating.

Condensing vs. non-condensing
