Electrical voltage, current, and component checks
Electrical testing can help determine whether power reaches the equipment and whether a motor, compressor, capacitor, contactor, relay, or control responds when operation is requested.
One voltage or current reading is not enough to condemn a component. Startup behavior, mechanical load, capacitor condition, wiring, rated data, and the equipment’s test procedure affect the diagnosis.
Total external static pressure
Static pressure measures the resistance faced by the blower across the accessible air-distribution system. It can support an airflow investigation involving a restrictive filter, return limitation, coil restriction, damper position, or duct condition.
The result must be compared with the rated limit for the installed equipment. Static pressure does not measure airflow in every room and does not replace duct leakage testing or balancing.
Supply, return, and equipment temperatures
Temperature readings show how the air changes as it passes through heating or cooling equipment. They can reveal an abnormal response when compared with the operating mode and equipment information.
Temperature difference alone does not confirm correct capacity, refrigerant charge, or airflow. Humidity, outdoor conditions, blower speed, runtime, and system design also affect the result.
Refrigerant pressures and line temperatures
These readings help evaluate refrigerant-circuit behavior under the current indoor and outdoor conditions. Accurate interpretation also depends on airflow, equipment design, metering-device type, and the specified charging method.
A low suction-side reading can also occur when airflow is restricted. It does not prove that the system needs refrigerant or identify the location of a leak.
Fault codes and control information
Some systems record the stage where operation stopped, a sensor reading outside its expected range, or a communication problem. Availability depends on the control, equipment design, and whether the information remains stored.
A code reports what the control detected. The cause can still involve wiring, power, airflow, drainage, sensors, or another connected component.
Drainage and moisture checks
Visible water can be traced through accessible drains, pans, pumps, overflow controls, cabinet surfaces, and signs of coil icing. This helps distinguish an HVAC drainage problem from another nearby water source.
