Intermittent control faults can be difficult because the HVAC system may operate normally by the time service begins. The timing and location of the complaint become useful diagnostic information.
If possible, record which space is affected, when the problem occurs, whether heating, cooling or fan operation changes, and whether an override, restart or power interruption affects the symptom.

How do I know whether the problem is the thermostat or the HVAC unit?
The control request and equipment response need to be checked separately. If the correct request reaches the equipment but the HVAC unit cannot complete the operating sequence, the problem may be in the equipment rather than the thermostat.
Can a commercial HVAC schedule cause comfort problems?
